What is a Link Exchange

A Link exchange is when two webmasters each link to one another's sites in an effort to raise the value of both sites with more links. Many webmasters emply emailing software which will search the 'search results' and find similar and high ranking sites. The software will automatically email the webmaster by finding their information in the WHOIS lookup. The email will be a custom template requesting a link exchange.

Generally link exchanges mean the webmasters will place a link on a dynamically generated link exchange page. Often the webmaster requests a link on your home page in return for the link they offer.

IMPORTANT: It is important to know that this link page for homepage is not a fair trade based on the Pagerank model, since your homepage likely has the highest PageRank and their link exchange directory has almost no PR to pass onto you in return.

IMPORTANT: It is also very important to know that in a Link exchange make sure the page they are offering is indexable. make sure they are not offer a redirect link, page with session ID's or the very sneaky nofokkow tag link.

Hover over the link they offer on their site and see what it actaully links to. If you find it matches one of these three examples you are getting mislead and this is deceptive practice by them

Example of a deceptive nofollow tag:
You need to view the source code for this one. In internet explorer choose 'VIEW' at the top of the page and then choose 'SOURCE'. Now when looking at the code if you see the link to your page is like this here:

<a href="yourwebsitename.com" rel="nofollow">your supposed link</a>

This is a new tag adopted by search engines called the no follow attribute or tag to tell search engines to notice but not give weight or follow this link. If a webmaster is doing this he is not offering you an actual exchange at all.
